Is there a way a pattern on metal would show up in an x-ray?
If you had, for example, a plate with a design on it in a box that you then x-rayed, would there be a way to make that pattern visible to the x-ray machine? Would the design need to be cut out of the plate, or perhaps made of an inlay of a different type of metal?
It's quite possible, given a sufficiently powerful x-ray. Metal does not block x-rays completely, it only attenuates. A slightly thinner area of metal will attenuate a little less. These differences can be brought out, particularly with computer-based post-processing of the image... something like image enhancement for photography.
